They Shared Things They NEVER Expected to…

What does a three-year-old make of studio lights in the living room? For Collin Gosselin, they’re the first thing he remembers. He grew up as one of eight kids on TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8, and today he’s 22, an author, a college student, and a business owner. Candace sits down with him for the first time since the two of them filmed Special Forces Season 5 together in the jungle, and he talks about a childhood he never chose and the life he’s choosing now.

Growing up on camera without a choice

Candace grew up on television too, but she names the difference right away: hers was a choice, and Collin’s wasn’t. He describes learning early that his value to his family came through performing. He says the biggest lie of reality TV is the word “reality,” because over time he was told how to say things, how to react, and even how to look at his siblings.

He calls one pattern “scripted happiness.” A crew would bring out puppies or ice cream, get the smiles and the shots, then cut and take everything away. The genuine happiness he remembers came when he and his siblings slipped away from the cameras to run through the trees and be kids.

At eight or nine, he worked up the nerve to tell his mom he didn’t want to do the show anymore. He wanted sleepovers and time with friends after school, and he says it’s the most afraid he’s ever been.

Trying to be seen as one of eight

Collin says he was the child seen the least, and he remembers bringing his mom flowers and gifts hoping for a response that didn’t come. Then Colleen, who was with his father for about eight years, stepped into the hardest part of his life. He calls her everything and more than a mother, and he credits her with keeping him from using his pain as an excuse to treat people badly.

The Marine Corps dream

Collin talks about what drew him to the Marine Corps: a brotherhood, a family he could choose, and structure that would build him up. He draws a clear line between discipline and coercion. For him, discipline is doing the right thing when the drill instructor isn’t looking.

He made it about nine or ten weeks into boot camp, roughly a week and a half from the final test. Then he was called into medical and told he’d be separated over a list of mental health diagnoses, which he traces to an Instagram post from his mom. He remembers crying in the bathroom, thinking about the brothers he’d have to leave. Back home, he paid for a full psychological evaluation, and he says none of the diagnoses held up. With the paperwork likely to take months, he enrolled in college instead.

Faith in the hardest places

Candace asks what keeps him getting back up, and Collin is honest that it wasn’t quick and he came home devastated. He believes in Jesus, and he admits he still wrestles with doubt. He describes being in an institution at 11 with no contact with his family, when it was just him, prayer, and Jesus.

Candace reminds him that people have been praying for him and his siblings for years, and that he was never alone. Here’s the thing: God was in that room with him at 11, and He’s with him now. Collin sees even the painful chapters as building toward his purpose, which is protecting and advocating for children.

Why kids aren’t a family’s paycheck

Collin says it isn’t a child’s job to put food on the table, and he wants parents who post their kids for income to ask who’s carrying the weight. He supports laws that protect kids on reality TV and social media. Candace shares how her parents treated acting as one more extracurricular, alongside soccer and piano, with the freedom to stop anytime. Collin wonders out loud how differently he might have felt if it had been his choice.

Saying yes to Special Forces

He said yes to the show without hesitating. Going back on TV as an adult, by his own choice, is how he takes back something that was once forced on him. What surprised him most were the late-night talks on their cots, where a group of strangers got honest with each other. He remembers Candace speaking openly about her faith in that hut, and he walked away convinced that vulnerability isn’t weakness.

A memoir and a listener question

Writing In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood was harder than any therapy session he’s sat through. The dedication calls on adults to speak up and stop it when they see a child being used this way.

The episode closes with a question from Vivian, who has a lot of siblings and finds good communication hard. Collin says to listen first. Candace points to the writer of James 1:19, who says to be quick to listen and slow to speak, and she adds honesty spoken with love. They both land on sharing how we’re feeling instead of what someone else did to us, the same way the group opened up in the jungle.
